I don’t think I am alone when I say I’d like to limit my endless abundance of possessions.
I think it’s somewhat amusing that right after the gratitude expressed on Thanksgiving Day, we launch into a buying frenzy that lasts through the holiday season.
I think about all the things in our lives and all the items in mine.
Funny. I used to think I was my “stuff”. I worked hard to collect the things I wanted. It seemed like they expressed who I thought I was, but when I moved to Florida many moons ago, I needed to release a lot of what I owned. Not only was I moving from a 3-story home to a one, but I was trading an abundance of antiques for a more coastal vibe.
I spent 6 months away in a furnished rental apartment. After 5 months, I wrote whatever I could remember that I owned and decided that would be what I would bring. I felt anything else didn’t mean that much to me.
I have very few regrets. It freed me to launch a new chapter in my life without the weight of past possessions.
It’s been a long time since that kind of significant purging occurred. I have a feeling another release may be in my future.
Let’s consider what we might release in the coming year.
How we might lighten our load by letting go?
What truly matters?
Who really matters?
And why?
This may be one of my most beneficial exercises for the start of a new year.
